AMIGOS DE CALCUTA
As group of young people, we decided to commit ourselves to the social concerns in India that we witnessed after a trip to India with Xavier Raj.
Xavier Raj is the founder of Missionaries of the World, a small foundation that started in 1997 that works to restore the dignity of the girls and boys on the street, who have been victims of sexual exploitation in the city of Kolkata.
In time, we got to know this project in Kobardanga (Kolkata), which has currently helped nearly 300 children in 5 home-schools receive accommodation and meals. Here they are provided with basic education in approved schools, receive medical attention and, above all, have the opportunity to discover and develop their talents and values.
Additionally, Xavier Raj works in the Ganges Delta, a hundred kilometers away from Kolkata, in a region called Sunderbans. This region is composed of many islets where people live with almost no development. The cyclones regularly hit; as well as tuberculosis, cholera, malaria, and all types of deficiency diseases. Natural tragedies are not the only thing that affects the region; the increasing contamination of the water in the area is also a huge problem. It is one of the regions with the most contamination in the water in the world.
Xavier Raj asked us for help to provide greater stability for all the children in Kobardanga and the families living in the Sunderbans, so that they could have the opportunity to live in better conditions. That’s when we decided to mobilize and began organizing activities for fundraising. Since then we have been supporting this project voluntarily with our humble means.
In 2011 we had decided to give shape to this proposal and organized a non-profit organization to provide the most effective help. We are a Spanish non-profit organization (CIF G-86265352), based in Madrid with a registration number in the Registro Nacional de Asociaciones (National Registry of Associations).
